Introduction to Sindh

Sindh is one of the distinct geographical, national territories occupied by the Punjab in the name of Pakistan. It is in the southeast of the Punjab on Pakistani map. Historically home to the historic Sindhi nation and Indus civilization, it has been known as the independent country of Sindhudesh, it is also locally known as the valley of Mehran.

Sindh is bordered by Balochistan occupied territory to the west, and Punjab to the north. Sindh also borders the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan to the east, and Arabian Sea to the south. Sindh’s landscape consists mostly of alluvial plains flanking the Indus River, the Thar Desert in the eastern portion of Sindh closest to the border with India, and the Kirthar Mountains in the western part of Sindh. Sindh’s climate is noted for hot summers and mild winters. The capital of occupied Sindh is Pakistan’s largest city and financial hub, Karachi.

Occupied Sindh has Pakistan’s second largest economy. Sindh’s capital, Karachi hosts the headquarters of several national banks. Sindh is home to a large portion of Pakistan’s industrial sector as well. Occupied Sindh contains two of Pakistan’s commercial seaports – Port Bin Qasim and the Port of Karachi. The remainder of Sindh has an agriculture based economy, and produces fruit and vegetables for consumption of other parts. Sindh is also the center of Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry.

Occupied Sindh, contrary to the religious orthodox Punjab and its doctrine theocratic state system called Pakistan, is known for its distinct culture which is strongly influenced by Sufism, pluralism and trans-religious coexistence. Several important Sufi shrines are located throughout the province which attracts millions of annual devotees. Occupied Sindh also has Pakistan’s highest percentage of Hindu residents. Sindh’s capital, Karachi, flushed with engineered influx of non-Sindhi settlers, is Pakistan’s most ethnically diverse city, with Muhajirs, or descendants of those who migrated to Pakistan from India in 1947, making up the majority of the population. The city has seen ethnic tensions boil over into violence on several occasions. Sindh is home to two UNESCO world heritage sites – the Historical Monuments at Makli, and the Archaeological Ruins at Mohenjo-Daro, the heart and first democratic secular city state of Indus civilization.

Sindh has the 2nd highest Human Development Index out of all of Pakistan’s provinces at 0.628. The 1998 Census of Pakistan indicated a population of 30.4 million. According to 2011 estimates the population of Sindh increased 81.5% to a total of 55.24 million since the census of 1998. Sindh was the second largest gainer of population after Balochistan during this period. Just under half of the population are urban dwellers, mainly found in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah District, Umerkot and Larkana.

Sindhis of Balochi origins make up about 30% of the total Sindhi population (they however speak Sindhi Saraiki as their native tongue), while Urdu-speaking Muhajirs make up over 19% of the total population of the province while Punjabi are 10% and Pashtuns settler, represent 7% (according 1998 Census of Pakistan) but influx of outsiders from other provinces as well as countries has significantly increased in past two decades. Millions of refugees from war-torn Afghanistan, Burma and Bangladesh are excluded from this figure.

Occupied Sindh has the second largest economy in terms of production of Pakistan (as figured by federal govt. figures which Sindhis have always doubted) because the provider of largest share of crude substances, minerals has seen no industrial development under Pakistani occupation and all these mineral are taken to Punjab where the 80% of the industries are built and hence Punjab is engineered to become the first largest economy of Pakistan. Despite this all, historically, Sindh’s contribution to Pakistan’s GDP has been between 30% to 32.7%. Its share in the service sector has ranged from 21% to 27.8% and in the agriculture sector from 21.4% to 27.7%. Performance wise, its best sector is the manufacturing sector, where its share has ranged from 36.7% to 46.5%. Endowed with coastal access, Occupied Sindh is a major center of economic activity in Pakistan and has a highly diversified economy ranging from heavy industry and finance, centered in and around Karachi to a substantial agricultural base along the river Indus. Sindh is Pakistan’s most natural gas producing province. Sindh is the richest province of Pakistan in natural resources of gas, petrol, and coal.

Still 70% of the native Sindhi population of Sindh lives under the poverty line.

History and Background:

Sindh” called “Sindhudesh (Sindhu Kingdom)” throughout its past history of 7000 years, is the historical land of the most gracious civilizations on the Earth: “The Indus Valley Civilization”: where the ancient city of “Moen Jo Daro” stands still. It’s the cradle of human civilization and culture, the first democratic secular city-state of the world, which pioneered trade, navigation and the first ever code of manmade laws without divine interpretation. Even Hammurabi’s codes and Moses’ ten commandments were derived from the ancient codes of Indus. Sindh is the land of Philosophy of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti which cited the first ever theories of the evolution of mankind and human civilizations to the ancient world; whose wisdom, knowledge, culture, civilization and arts are well known to the world today.

Although It has been undergoing various highs and lows in the history from the conquests of Aryans, Persians (Cyrus The Great), Greeks (Alexander The Great), Scythian, Kushan, Arabs (Ummayad), Moguls (Akbar) and British to the currently forced annexation by Pakistan (Punjab), however, it has managed to preserve its distinct cultural and national identity despite all these invasions, occupations, and subjugations. It has mostly existed as a free independent, self-sufficient, capable, nation and country since 7000 years of her civilization with some intermixed eras of alien subjugation. Sindh had been surviving thousands of alien invasions throughout her history till she finally caught up with mighty British Empire in 1843 A.D.

The historical free land of Sindh was enchained in the slavery of mighty remnants of British i.e. the Punjabi army and civil bureaucratic setup in the name of the theocratic state of Pakistan on 14th of August 1947, when British quitted the India. Till then, Sindh has been suffering the enforced slavery, atrocities, exploitation, oppression and occupation by Pakistan. A historical free land whose history and civilization dates back to prehistoric times is deprived of its national identity, geographic, politico-economic authority, the right to freedom of expression and freedom of organization, national and human rights, liberties of social cultural customs and religious practices, education, health, the right to activism etc.

Sindh, currently enchained in the forced theocratic pseudo-federation of Islamist extremist terrorist state of Pakistan, has been a distinct historic independent nation and homeland since the ages. It derives its name from the river Indus where the great Indus civilization thrived once on its banks. Contrary to Pakistan, it has been a historic natural homeland of Sindhi nation with a millennia long history of independent national identity and self-rule. Its fate turned upside down when it was lastly colonized by British imperialist colonialism in 1843 A.D. The British Imperial rule was first to undermine the identical existence of Sindh by merging it with the Bombay Presidency for their so-called administrative ease. Sindhi political classes struggled for decades to restore its identity until its separation from Bombay in 1936. The premature Sindhi statehood under British rule in late 30s and early 40s (of 20th century) was caught in the crosshairs of re-establishing its identity and determining its politico-economic discourse when the uncertain times of post-WWII and British withdrawal from India left them with no other choice but to be included in the so-called dominion of Pakistan against their will. The partition of British India erased the premature roots of modern Sindhi identical nationhood when its upper and middle class consisting of millions of Sindhi Hindu citizens (who dominated the urban economy) were forced to leave after the establishment of Pakistan. Sindhi identity and separate nationhood has become a struggle and movement since then.
Pakistan was created on the basis of the pan-Islamist “Two Nation Theory” which suggests that the Muslims and Non-Muslims (disbelievers as the say) of the Indian sub-continent are two nations. It was a result of British’s “divide and rule policy” in India which found a way into the post-independence history of India to continue the British control over Indian ocean and deter the influence of Soviet designs in South Asia.  This theory which was not well-considered by the 90% of the Muslims of subcontinent provided the British with an excuse to carve the Pakistan out of the Indian map and undermine the independence of the historic natural territories of once independent Bengal, Sindh, Baluchistan, and North-Western Frontier Province (Now KPK) nations which were gifted to its loyal West-Punjabi mercenaries i.e. Pakistan Army under the name of Pakistan. The resistance to the hegemonic theocratic framework of Pakistan began from the first day of its creation. From language riots in Bengal, termination of Sindh Provincial Assembly, protests in NWFP and armed rebellion in Baluchistan it was made clear that this unnatural new-born state in the name of Islam was never recognized by the people of any of these territories. That was why the theocratic state was unable to formulate a constitution for the 9 long years after its creation and was ruled by military dictators until its ideological and practical downfall in 1971 with the fall of Dacca (independence of Bangladesh). The fall of Dacca was the result of Bengali genocide by Punjabi army to stop the democratic control of majority Bengalis and other oppressed nations mandated to them by the first ever elections in the history of Pakistan. After the independence of Bengal, the ideological and practical basis for the so-called federation of Pakistan were destroyed and the other oppressed nations were in no mood to make a new social contract with Punjab on any basis. The Punjab military establishment forced all the remnant territories i.e. Sindh, Baluchistan, KPK and PoK into a self-made constitution which was passed by a truncated assembly having no mandate to formulate it. Hence, the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan (1973) is an illegal document which was imposed upon these oppressed natural nations chained in the forced federation of Pakistan without their consent and therefore bears no legitimate value.

A brief introduction to Sindh – Sindhudesh Movement – JSMM

G.M Sayed the senior Sindhi politician and scholar was imprisoned and kept under house arrests for 33 years throughout his live. He shook the illegitimate foundations and theocratic ideology of Pakistan by proposing the secessionist secularist anti-thesis against the idea of Pakistani nationhood and started the movement for the complete political, economic, geographic independence of Sindh from Pakistan. This movement, called Sindhudesh Independence Movement, is the only ideological political movement within Pakistan which rejected the Islamist, theocratic, extremist statehood of Pakistan, preached secularism and inspired other independence movements across the occupied territories of Pakistan.

Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) follows the humanitarian secularist political ideology of Sayed and struggles for the independence of Sindh from the theocratic, fascist, Islamist extremist terrorist clutches of Pakistan. Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz is the only Party in Pakistan which has been a staunch supporter of West’s war on Islamist extremism and terrorism in the South Asia, and has been protesting the Pakistani maneuvers to sabotage it. JSMM is the only party in Pakistan which has carried US, and Israeli flags (otherwise this act is considered as blasphemous in Pakistan) in its protests against Pakistan’s sponsorship of global Jihadism and terrorism in the world. It’s JSMM that has convinced the masses of Sindh that USA, Israel and India are not our enemies but friends and that’s why the people of Sindh consider the West as enlightened and civilized saviors that would rid the entire humanity from the hell of Islamist extremism. JSMM is also the only political party in Pakistan which has been strongly opposing and protesting the construction of China Pakistan Economic Corridor which not only threatens the existence of Sindhi, Pashtun, PoK and Baluch nations occupied by Pakistan, but will eventually destroy the peace and integrity in the entire South Asian region (one can easily understand this by overlooking the recent Pakistan backed terrorist attacks in Afghanistan). That’s why JSMM has been declared as a US and Indian political implantation in Pakistan and banned by rogue Pakistani military establishment. Pakistani military establishment is carrying out a full-scale military and intelligence based operation against my party in particular and Sindhudesh independence movement in general since 2004. It has murdered more than 40 leaders of our political movement and hundreds have endured the torment of enforced disappearances, inhuman state torture in secret detention cells of ISI for months/years, and imprisonments as well.
JSMM has been continuously writing and appealing the UN and political leadership of US, Germany, UK, France and other civilized nations to pay a heed to the miseries and wails of Sindhi nation and take serious steps to abstain Pakistan from its persecution of secular political activists and religious minorities, economic plunder and geographic occupation of Sindh, Pashtunistan and Baluchistan, and its sponsorship of terrorism across the region, but unfortunately to no avail.

Pakistan

Pakistan, the true Islamic State in its essence and practice, is an unnatural state, a forced federation of historic natural nations. Pakistan is a state created, sustained and run by Punjabi military proudly following pan-Islamist, Global Jihadist doctrine. The Islamist extremism and terrorism is a strategic asset of Pakistan from which it will never withdraw. Pakistani army is using Taliban, Haqqani Network and Jamaet-ud-Dawa to to destabilize American peace process in Afghanistan. The entire losses of USA and Afghan nation in the war on terror are covertly inflicted by Pakistani ISI and its militant Jihadi vessels. Pakistan is the womb, vector and epicenter of terrorism and world would never taste peace and security until its destruction.
The Pakistani democracy is nothing but a grand puppet-show whose strings have always been pulled by the playful hands of corrupt Punjabi army ruling Pakistan since its inception. Pakistan is a state without a nation owned by the tyrant fascist army. The USA as an ally has been also playing unknowingly in the hands of notorious Pakistani pan-Islamist army; which has been deceptively using it in its benefit to stalemate the democratic and just Republic of India. It’s the US which has enabled Pakistan to get away with the four full-scale wars with India, notoriously initiated by the Pakistan. The US trust in Pakistan’s allegiance and loyalty has greatly enabled it to maneuver the political stability in Afghanistan after Soviet withdrawal. Now Pakistan is shifting its military, economic and strategic dependence on the west and selling it to China in the name of CPEC.

Despite the disastrous effects of the CPEC on Pakistan’s sovereignty and economy the Pakistan army is selling all the key territorial and strategic positions along Indian ocean to China for its self-centric benefits and the worst part is, all these assets belong to the oppressed nations of Sindh and Baluchistan. China’s naval presence in these areas would not only destroy our nations but would also greatly harm the peaceful American and Indian activities in the region. Escalating arms race, military tensions, nuclear buildups, destability in Afghanistan would eventually endanger global peace and security.  CPEC is not just an economic corridor but the economic-military aggression of China over the Indian Ocean. Once established, this monopolistic agenda would bring nothing but slavery, destruction, military confrontations and destability in the entire world.

Therefore, the US, Israel and European superpowers seem the only sensible civilized countries to counter these evil designs of theocratic Pakistani state and allies of the secular oppressed historic nations chained in Pakistan, for the sake of regional/global peace and security.

What must be done?

Pakistan is a fragile failed state from within, drowning in inflation and corruption, identity crisis and crisis of federalism. Seven decades of military dominance over the state and Jihadist military doctrine in action has destroyed the very fabric of its society as well as notion of nationhood. It’s nexus with China is the only way that seems an escape to the Pakistan Military Establishment, but indeed, it is not what they have thought. Pakistan is not easy to be tackled by a direct foreign invasion as it has fanatic military and can cause a potential nuclear threat to the world peace and global security if not handled with care. But Pakistan is a roof without pillars and can easily crumble on its own feet from within.  The national independence movements in Sindh, Baluchistan, KPK, FATA and PoK need global attention.
Sindh, being the second most populous province of Pakistan, is not only the practical political anti-thesis to Pakistani theocratic statehood but also the economic aorta of the Pakistani state. With almost the 70% of its contributions to Pakistani economy it is the only land with two functional sea-ports along the Arabian sea, largest agrarian economy and largest number of mineral and natural resources. Sindh is the strategic key to tame Pakistan. Pakistan is economically dead without Sindh.
Sindhudesh movement is a wide-spread movement across entire Sindh with its followers in millions, but has been ignored and neglected by the international community since decades.
The only backdrop for Sindhudesh movement has been the absence of national capitalist because of the migration of Sindhi Hindus from Sindh to India after partition. That’s why Sindhudesh Movement has been lacking economic, political and diplomatic means to start mass uprising against the decades of slavery, humiliation and oppression.
Therefore, the independence of Sindh and establishment of secular republic of Sindhudesh is the need of the history and key to regional peace. If, the USA, Israel, Europe, India and other civilized countries want to bring peace in the region they must have to come in terms with the political parties (not the individuals) related to Sindhudesh Movement and support them not only politically and diplomatically on international stage but also practically to empower them by every means against the tyrant fascist Islamist theocratic state of Pakistan.

The blockade of military aid, diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions and full-scale support of the secularist movements for the national independence of the historic natural nations chained in the forced federation of theocratic Pakistan,   are the only options to destabilize Pakistan and establish peace in the region.
